The Fort De Soto Triathlon is THIS SUNDAY! Packet pickup is Saturday. Thanks for registering!

This email is to remind you of important information that you need to know before the event.

HOW & WHERE TO RACK YOUR BIKE

HOW TO RACK YOUR BIKE - To allow more space in transition, we use 2 sided racking on the bike racks.  You need to rack on a spot marked with a GREEN mark.  Every other spot has a green mark and those that don't have a green mark on the other side.  This will allow you to put your shoes, helmet, etc. in the space to your left as that person will be on the other side of the rack and put their stuff behind your bike.  Also, each rack space is marked with 2 black lines to define each space so nobody hogs up more than their share of the rack.  IMPORTANT: Your handlebars should be on your side of the bike rack to prevent them from snagging the bikes next to you.  Please see the illustration below for racking instructions:

WHERE TO RACK YOUR BIKE - Use the transition layout below to determine which row (1 thru 10) that you are on and approximately how far your spot is from each end.  You can scan the QR code to open the transition layout on your phone.  The transition layout will be available on race day at packet pickup, the information booth, and with the security guards at each end of transition.

PLEASE READ!  IMPORTANT!

Bring Your Photo ID -  You'll need your photo ID for packet pickup.

Pay for Parking - Fort DeSoto Park has a new pay for parking system.  To pay for parking, the easiest way is to download the ParkMobile app on your phone but you can also pay at the kiosk at the park.

Race Morning - Please arrive on race morning between 5:30 and 6:00 am regardless of your race start time.  If you arrive earlier you will just be waiting at the gate and blocking our volunteers from getting in.  They have a gate code to get in early.  Please don’t try to enter or block the road before 5:30am.  Also, don’t arrive after 6:00am or you will probably not have enough time to park, get your packet, get your chip, organize your stuff in transition, go to the restroom, warm up, and get to the beach in time for your start.  THE GATES CLOSE AT 6:30am, so all spectators should arrive before that time or they will not be able to enter the park to watch.  Race start times are:

  • 7:00 - International Distance
  • 7:15 - Duathlon
  • 7:20 - Sprint Distance

What to bring to a triathlon:

  • Your bike (a pump, flat kit, and eye protection are recommended)

  • Water: 1. FULL bike bottle with water or sports drink for when you are on the bike, and 2. Water for Transition: after the swim and before the run.

  • Pre-race hydration & nutrition (water, sports drink, bars, etc.)

  • Swim goggles (a spare set in case they break in the car is a good idea too)

  • Transition towel to wipe off your feet after the swim

  • Bike helmet

  • Bike shoes if you have clip in pedals

  • Running shoes

  • Sunscreen

  • Race belt for running number (free to those that go to early packet pickup before race day)

  • Post race clothing

  • Keep all items organized neatly near your bike in Transition. Large bulky items such as folding chairs will be removed from the transition area.

What you get at PACKET PICKUP (day before the race. Late packet pickup is available to some on race morning):

  • Silicone swim cap

  • Number kit (contains bike, run, and helmet numbers)

  • Race Number Tattoo (please apply before sunscreen)

  • T-shirt

  • Tote bag

  • Race program (select races)

What you get RACE MORNING:

  • Timing Chip (return at the finish line).  This is VITAL so you get your race time and splits.  This is a separate line from packet pickup, so if you pick up the day before you do not need to wait in the packet pickup line to get your timing chip.  Please also scan your chip to be sure your information is correct.

What you get during the race (and post race):

  • Water is provided on the run course approximately every mile (sports drink usually is, too).  You need to bring your own water/sports drink for the bike and pre-race.

  • Finisher medal at the finish line - congratulations!

  • Water, sports drink, and light snacks at the finish line.

  • Award medal if you place top 3 in your category.

Packet Pickup - Please pick up your packet on SATURDAY between 9:30 am and Noon at the race site!  This will greatly reduce your stress, and ours, on race morning as you’ll avoid long packet pickup lines!  The race starts on time regardless of if there’s a line at packet pickup still. By attending early pickup you’ll also get to scope out the venue in the daylight and know what to expect for race morning.  It’s a win-win!

  • Pre Race Clinic – Time: 10 a.m. The Integrity Multisport race clinic was created to help triathletes and duathletes learn the things they need to know to successfully and safely complete a triathlon.  The clinic is open to anyone with questions or just looking to expand their knowledge on triathlon.

Venue Layout & RESTROOMS - Transition and Finish areas are accessible from the final 2 left turns as you reach the northwestern corner of the park.  Please go to http://fortdesototrilogy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/2024-Venue-Layout-01-4.png to see the venue layout map.  While we do have port-o-lets right by the transition area there is a restroom building on the way to the swim and one the other direction as well (see map).  The lines are usually shorter as everyone defaults to using the port-o-johns by transition.

Run Course - The run course is 3.1 miles for the Sprint (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44796874) and 6.2 miles for the International (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44796888).  The run is an out and back run on the paved park path and gives a great chance to see friends out on the course as well as how far ahead or behind you are :-).  The first run for the duathlon is (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44826694). The 2nd run for the duathlon is the same as the 3.1 mile sprint triathlon run above.

Laps (International Distance Only) - You will encounter a very large sign on both the bike and run courses that say Lap with an arrow in one direction and Finish with an arrow in another direction.  If you are in the SPRINT distance, follow the FINISH ARROW!  If you are in the International distance, follow the LAP ARROW and do a 2nd lap, then follow the FINISH ARROW to complete the bike or run.  IT IS VITAL THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THIS!  Volunteers have no way to know which lap you are on, so YOU AND ONLY YOU must be responsible to know if you need to complete another lap or not.  If you mess up and come in early, just go back out and do another lap.  We'll sort out the times and delete the extra chip times in the timing system.

Cutoff Times (International Distance) - You must finish the first lap of the bike course by 8:15 a.m. or you will be directed to transition and not allowed a 2nd lap.  The road must be clear by 9:00 a.m. by park rules, so we have to enforce this strictly!  You must also finish the first lap of the run course by 9:30 a.m. or you will be directed to the finish line.  There is a 3 hour time limit for the entire course.  You need to be able to swim a ½ mile in 20 minutes, bike 15 mph average for 20 miles, and run a 12.5 minute mile average for 6.2 miles to complete the International Distance.  If you are faster on the bike, then you have more time for the run.  If you cannot average the stated pace/speed, then please join us for the Sprint Distance Triathlon.

Chip Pickup - Chip pickup is race morning only.  When you get your chip, please scan it at the computer next to the chips and verify that your information is correct.  If it is not, double check your chip number.  If your chip and bib numbers match and it is still incorrect, please tell someone at packet pickup so they can correct it.

Body Marking - We give out body marking tattoos to identify you when you don’t have your race number (i.e. swim).  Please apply them with a wet washcloth or sponge to your left shoulder facing out to the side.  There will be an orange bucket with wet sponges for you to use.

Course Maps - Course maps can be found at https://fortdesototrilogy.com/index.php/race-course/

Dropping Out - If you are unable to finish the race, please return your chip to the Timing Truck so you are accounted for and we don’t send a search team out looking for you!  Do not give it to someone out on the course.

Awards Schedule - The times below are approximate and each ceremony may start a few minutes early or late depending on how long each race ceremony lasts.

  1. Aquabike - 9:10

  2. Duathlon - 9:20

  3. Sprint Triathlon - 9:35

  4. International Triathlon - 9:55

Volunteers Needed
People are the most important part of any event.  Without proper levels of staff and volunteers events are not possible.

Volunteering at races is FUN!  You can also earn free races!  We need volunteers for the upcoming Fort DeSoto race.  Volunteers are needed for:

  • Water stations and Finish Line 6:30am-10am - earn $55 off your next race
  • Saturday Setup 7:30am-9:30am - earn $40 off your next race, get your packet first, and get the best rack spot in transition!

We can also use a few volunteers for race day packet pickup (5:00am), and post-race cleanup (immediately after race), but our biggest needs are volunteers during the race and for Saturday setup.

If you are racing, please bring someone to volunteer and they can earn credits for YOU!  Volunteers must be able and willing to perform the tasks needed.

Please note that discounts are for a future race, not the one volunteered at, as you have to volunteer to earn the credit first.

If you would like to volunteer or bring someone else to volunteer on race day, please email [email protected] with what you are available for.

Please help!  The races cannot happen without volunteers!  This is your chance to give back to the sport.  Volunteer or bring one with you, pretty please!
