COURSE INSTRUCTIONS
SWIM COURSE
PLEASE SEE UPDATED SWIM INSTRUCTIONS BELOW

SPRINT SWIM: Swimmers will keep buoys to their RIGHT at ALL TIMES.

INTERMEDIATE SWIM: Swimmers will enter the water and keep the GREEN BUOY to their LEFT when making the left turn. KEEP ALL OTHER BUOYS TO YOUR RIGHT.

OLYMPIC SWIM: IGNORE THE GREEN BUOY. KEEP ALL BUOYS TO YOUR RIGHT.

Intermediate racers will start near the swim exit, swim north then back south. Olympic racers will swim south, back north, then back south again to get 1500 meters. We cannot swim out further into the ocean as it is too shallow. There is a 500 meter long channel that we swim in, thus the course design.

The swim is the safest ocean swim you could possibly do. The reason for this is that most of the areas at Crandon are very shallow. We will swim in a relatively narrow channel that is deeper than the surrounding water.

If you swim either away from or towards the shoreline you will encounter shallower waters if you’d like to take a break. This is why we don’t have a different shaped course as this is the ONLY area deep enough for swimming.

SWIM PRACTICE

Please exit the water no later than 6:40 a.m.

BIKE COURSE

Bikes will turn left to enter the park at the north entrance (red line) and exit the park at the northernmost exit (green line) (see map).  Here’s the link to the course: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40260394

Right click on image and open in new tab to zoom in.

RUN COURSE

Sprint racers will enjoy a scenic 3.3 km run course with beautiful views of the beach. Intermediate racers will run 2 laps. Olympic racers will run 3 laps. Click below to see the run course:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45424766

LAPS

You will encounter the following very large sign on both the bike and run courses.  If you are in the SPRINT distance, follow the FINISH ARROW!

If you are in the INTERMEDIATE distance, follow the LAP ARROW and do a 2nd lap, then follow the FINISH ARROW to complete the bike or run. If you are in the OLYMPIC distance, follow the LAP ARROW and do a 2nd AND 3rd lap, then follow the FINISH ARROW to complete the bike or run.  IT IS VITAL THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THIS!  Volunteers have no way to know which lap you are on, so YOU AND ONLY YOU must be responsible to know if you need to complete another lap or not.  If you mess up and come in early, just go back out and do another lap.  We'll sort out the times and delete the extra chip times in the timing system.

DUATHLON

Duathlon (run #1) - All duathletes will start at 7:20 am on the road on the way to the swim. The first run will be ¾ of a mile and go down to the track, around the track, and back to transition.

See the map at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34754477.

VENUE LAYOUT

RESTROOMS

There is a permanent restroom facility right between the transition/finish area and the beach as indicated on the map above. It has about a dozen stalls for each gender. There is also an additional restroom facility on the way to the sprint swim start (as indicated on the swim map) and several restrooms along the run course (one right next to the water station at the circle).

AWARDS SCHEDULE

9:10 - Aquabike awards
9:20 - Duathlon Awards
9:40 - Sprint Triathlon Awards

10:00 - Intermediate Triathlon Awards
10:15 - Olympic Triathlon Awards

*Please get your bike out of transition BEFORE your awards ceremony!

IMPORTANT NOTES

TRANSITION - To allow more space in transition, we will be changing to 2 sided racking on the bike racks.  This will allow you to put your shoes, helmet, etc. in the space to your left as that person will be on the other side of the rack and put their stuff behind your bike.  Also, each rack space is marked with 2 black lines to define each space so nobody hogs up more than their share of the rack.  IMPORTANT: Your handlebars should be on your side of the bike rack to prevent them from snagging the bikes next to you.  Please see the illustration below for racking instructions:

Use the link below to open the transition layout to find your rack spot race morning: https://tridirector.com/transitionlayout.php

Please be courteous to your fellow racers and only use the space between the black marks so that everyone has space for their bike.

SMALL POOL TO RINSE FEET - We will place a small inflatable pool right after you exit the beach to rinse the sand off your feet.

Top 10 Things You Need to Know

Hi Athletes,

Thank you for registering for the Mack Cycle Tri-Miami Triathlon at Crandon Park.  You will find Crandon Park to be an absolutely beautiful venue for our event!  There are a few things I’d like to share with you in advance of the event:

  1. Photo ID  - Your photo ID is ALWAYS required to pick up you packet. Please have your photo ID or a picture of it ready to show staff.
  2. Packet Pickup is Friday from 12pm to 6pm and on Saturday from 10am to 4pm at Mack Cycle in Miami.  More info below.
  3. Bike Course U-Turn - Below is an image of the bike course U-turn that you will encounter at the bottom of the BIG bridge.  BE CAREFUL, MANAGE YOUR SPEED GOING DOWNHILL, AND DO NOT PASS RIGHT BEFORE THE U-TURN!  Losing a few seconds isn't going to change your placement, but crashing will!  BE SAFE!!!
  4. Bike Course Lanes & Safety - Below is an image of the bike course lanes.  It is important to know how the course works so you aren't confused when you get on the course.  When you leave the park you will use the bike lane on your way out to the turnaround.  If you need to pass, do so on the left, then return to the bike lane on the right.  Always ride on the right side of the road or you will get a blocking or position penalty by the referee.  On your way back you will also stay on the right, but you will be next to a line of cones that cone off a half lane for recreational cyclists that are not participating in the race.  Stay to the right at all times, except when passing, then return to the right.  There are no cars on the course, though a few may cross the course at intersections manned by police.  Always be vigilant as many things can happen (a car can cross the course, there could be a bad patch of pavement, another rider may pass you unexpectedly or drift towards you when you are trying to pass, or a recreational rider may not use their dedicated lane - don't follow them - know the course!).  We have a mix of riders from first timers to very fast riders, so please be respectful of the other riders on the course.  Let's STAY SAFE out there!
  5. Cutoff Times - In order to complete the Olympic distance you need to be able to complete the swim in under 42 minutes (45 minutes for a mile), bike 15 mph average including the bridge, and run 13 minutes per mile.  If you aren’t sure if you can do this, please register for the sprint distance instead as we have hard cutoffs to open the roadway back up.
  6. You MUST pay for parking or you will get a ticket.  Go to paybyphone.com and enter location 46252 upon arrival to pay for parking.
  7. Parking Entrance - The traffic counter flow to remove cars from our side of the Causeway will start at the Crandon north entrance, THUS you will need to enter the park at the 2nd Crandon entrance (blue line).  Here’s a link to the directions: https://goo.gl/maps/Ya8ms263kr7vTKnaA  You will turn left as soon as you enter the park to go to lot #2 on the north side of the park (see map).

Right click on image and open in new tab to zoom in.

We will have an “EVENT PARKING” sign where you turn in and inside the park directing you left to the correct parking lot.

  8. IMPORTANT USAT RULES - This race is sanctioned with USA Triathlon and as such all USAT rules are in effect. Please go to https://www.usatriathlon.org/multisport/rules for more information on the rules.
    1. You must stay 6 bike lengths behind the rider in front of you and you have 25 seconds to enter this zone to complete a pass.
    2. If you are passed, you must drop back 6 bike lengths before attempting to pass the person that passed you.
    3. You must stay to the right side of your lane except when passing or you will receive a blocking penalty!
    4. Pass ONLY on the LEFT.
    5. No Headphones are allowed.
    6. Ages are based on 12/31 of the current year, so if you age up to the next age group before then, you will be in that age group now.
  9. THANK YOU Mack Cycle!  Please give a thank you to Mary Jane and her team at Mack Cycle for their support of this event.  Without their support, this event would not be possible.

  10. HAVE FUN OUT THERE!!! - Triathlon is supposed to be fun!  Don't take things too seriously and forget why you are here.

What to Bring & What You Get

What to bring to a triathlon:

  • Your bike (a pump, flat kit, and eye protection are recommended)

  • Water: 1. FULL bike bottle with water or sports drink for when you are on the bike, and 2. Water for Transition: after the swim and before the run.

  • Pre-race hydration & nutrition (water, sports drink, bars, etc.)

  • Swim goggles (a spare set in case they break in the car is a good idea too)

  • Transition towel to wipe off your feet after the swim

  • Bike helmet

  • Bike shoes if you have clip in pedals

  • Running shoes

  • Sunscreen

  • Race belt for running number (free to those that go to early packet pickup before race day)

  • Post race clothing

  • Keep all items organized neatly near your bike in Transition. Large bulky items such as folding chairs will be removed from the transition area.

What you get at PACKET PICKUP (day before the race. Late packet pickup is available to some on race morning):

  • Silicone swim cap

  • Number kit (contains bike, run, and helmet numbers)

  • Race Number Tattoo (please apply before sunscreen)

  • T-shirt

What you get RACE MORNING:

  • Timing Chip (return at the finish line).  This is VITAL so you get your race time and splits.  This is a separate line from packet pickup, so if you pick up the day before you do not need to wait in the packet pickup line to get your timing chip.  Please also scan your chip to be sure your information is correct.

Other Items to Know

Volunteers Needed

People are the most important part of any event.  Without proper levels of staff and volunteers events are not possible.  We need YOUR help!  Please volunteer or bring someone to volunteer while you race!  You can even volunteer for setup and/or cleanup before and after racing.  We offer volunteer hours, race credit, or even pay if they are good!  We need your help!  To sign up a volunteer, please email [email protected].

Help where you can.  It's fun, you learn a lot about the behind the scenes, and it builds good karma :-)

Body Marking Tattoos

Please pick up your packet at the early packet pickup and you will receive body marking tattoos that you can self apply before the race.  If you pick up race morning, please bring your own wet sponge, hand towel, or paper towel to apply the tattoos to yourself.  Here’s a video showing how to self apply: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt6PdG21C3o  Please apply them to your left bicep so our backup timers and photographers can easily identify you.

Thank A Volunteer!

These events would not be possible without A LOT of volunteers.  Triathletes, of course, make the best volunteers as you all know what to do.  Unfortunately, not enough triathletes volunteer, so we work with various groups:  ROTC, High School students, boy scouts, Canteen fire rescue support services, etc.  While we donate to these organizations, the individuals who come out receive no benefit themselves.  So, please say “THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING” when you see them and if they make a mistake, please be forgiving.  Also, try volunteering out yourself as it is fun and you’ll earn race credit!

Transition Security

Only registered racers are allowed to enter the transition area. You must show your race number to enter transition and your number must match the bike you are taking out.

Backup Timing

While we have chip timing, occasionally a chip is lost or there is some malfunction somewhere. Because of this, we have backup timers at the start, finish, and each end of the transition. Please help yourself and say your number to the person holding a tablet at each of these locations when you pass by. Having your time backed up can be extremely helpful if you lose your chip, get the wrong chip, or various other little things that can happen.

Dropping Out

If you cannot finish the race for any reason, please come to the finish line and let us know and return your chip.  This way we know that you are OK and don’t send a search crew out to find you

Water Stations

Water stations will have water and Gatorade Endurance sports drink.  Aid stations will be located approximately every mile throughout the course.  There will be no aid station on the bike course, so please bring enough fluids to complete the course.

Wetsuits

No, this race will not be wetsuit legal.

Aquabike
Note that the Aquabike ends once you enter transition after the bike.  You may continue and go through the finish chute to get your medal, but the clock will have already stopped.

Thank You To The Following:

Many thanks to Mack Cycle for their partnership and support. Make sure to check out their unbeatable inventory and awesome customer service!

The U.S. Center for SafeSport created the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP), a collection of proactive prevention and training policies for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement to help create a safer and healthier environment in which minor athletes can thrive.

The MAAPP was originally released in 2019 to support organizations and individuals in preventing abuse in sport and meeting requirements under federal law. As a member of USA Triathlon and participant at a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, you are required to follow these policies.

The MAAPP focuses on in-program contact between an Adult Event Participant and a minor athlete and covers the following Required Prevention Policies: One-on-One Interaction, Meeting and Training Sessions, Athletic Training Modalities, Massages and Rubdowns, Locker Rooms and Changing Areas, Electronic Communications, Transportation, and Lodging.

All Required Prevention Policies apply at all facilities or locations that are partially or fully under the jurisdiction of USA Triathlon. Partial or full jurisdiction includes the following:

Any event or competition sanctioned by USA Triathlon
Any facility that USA Triathlon owns, leases, or rents for competition, training, or practices

Any hotel or lodging that the team is using when traveling to a sanctioned USA Triathlon event or competition

All Required Prevention Policies must be followed by:

Adult Event Participants who have direct contact with minor athletes

Adult Event Participants authorized to have direct contact with minor athletes

Adult Event Participants authorized to have authority over minor athletes

Any Adult Event Participant at a facility that is partially or fully under the jurisdiction of USA Triathlon

As the MAAPP will be enforced at the Las Olas Triathlon being held on April 13th, please review the MAAPP at a Glance in preparation for the upcoming event. Additionally, please review USA Triathlon’s SafeSport Policies and References.

Mandatory Reporting

As a reminder, all Adult Event Participants – including those with one-day memberships – are Mandatory Reporters. If you see or hear a report of any form of abuse, whether it is sexual, physical, mental or another type of abuse you are required to report that abuse within a 24-hour period. You can file a report to the U.S. Center for SafeSport through its online reporting form or by calling the U.S. Center for SafeSport at 833-587-7233 or USA Triathlon at [email protected].
